The different perspectives shown are from characters who don't have all of the information that we, as readers of the other lore, know, so their opinion of certain events and individuals is different.

I won't go into detail, because Kilo-5 is a genuinely good read and I don't want to spoil it for you, but some of the messages in the series are "smash-them-over-the-head-with-a-gravity-hammer" subtle. Now, in the Kilo-5 trilogy Traviss portrays established characters in ways that hadn't been seen before.
For Halo, he is revered because he basically set the standard that all following additions to the lore are held to. Personally, I don't think its fair to compare Nylund to Traviss - Nylund basically created the lore backbone and foundation of the Halo canon, and is (rightly so) held up as one of the great science fiction authors.

The Flood also features several side stories. Halo: The Flood, the novelization of Halo: Combat Evolved by William Dietz. Halo: The Fall of Reach, this book explains what happened before Halo: Combat Evolvedand Master Chief's origins with the SPARTAN-II Program. The first three novels were published by Ballantine Books, while the last ten were published by Tor Books. The Halo Novels are books about 343 pages each and have expanded heavily on the Halo Universe.
